Gandhiji met him at the Johannesburg Vegetarian Restaurant; it was Polak who gave Gandhiji a copy of RuskinΓÇÖs Unto This Last ; he qualified himself to be an attorney at GandhijiΓÇÖs stance and joined him in his work; succeeded Kitchin as Editor of Indian Opinion. Before that he was the Assistant Editor of the newspaper The Transvaal Critic; visited India and England to help South African Indians in their struggle; went to prison during the passive resistance movement.
